Neoclassical Interior Design: History, Elements and Tips

During the eighteenth century, the Neoclassical interior design cemented itself as what would be the most prevailing design trend of the day. It was first introduced in Europe and, to a lesser extent, America as the rival of Romanticism. The Neoclassical design exudes elegance and sophistication. Of course, most home remodeling contractors today elevate the fundamentals of the design by putting sensible modern touches to the living space.

History of Neoclassical Interior Design

The Vitruvian principles of design and work by Andrea Palladio, a Renaissance architect, influenced both the interior and exterior designs of buildings back in the mid-eighteenth century. But the rediscovery of Pompei and Herculaneum in the 1700s stirred an interest in classical home architecture. The style continued to evolve, and most interiors of the succeeding era were influenced by the furnishings and decor of the classical period.

Key Elements of Neoclassical Interior Design

Neoclassical design is perceived to be timeless and charming. There are many diverse examples of Neoclassical architecture and design for residential buildings. Bringing together the key elements of colors, furniture and decorative motifs can help you turn your old home into a bright and elegant Neoclassical-inspired space.

  • Colors: The dominant colors found in Neoclassical interiors are mild. These include white, cream, gray, yellow, green and other muted shades. Palettes used are of low contrast.
  • Furniture: Simple and symmetrical are the key. Exposed wood or metal structures provide the defining outlines of furniture while high-quality and luxurious upholstery completes the intended look.
  • Decorative motifs: Decorative motifs are floral-inspired, particularly in pillows, rugs and wall designs. Statues, urns and jugs are also common ornaments.

Tips on Applying These Elements

Creating a Neoclassical home should start with mapping out the colors. Muted shades are the defining characteristics of this timeless interior design. You can start with one element, usually the rug, and then build your furniture around it. Although not a minimalist design, the Neoclassical style should not be extremely busy to the eyes.
