How To Tell if a Remodeler’s Reviews Are Genuine

Online reviews are invaluable resources when considering hiring a remodeler for your home project. However, with increased competition in the construction industry, discerning genuine reviews has become necessary — unscrupulous businesses using fake reviews to lure unsuspecting clients are not unheard-of. In today’s post, Design Build Remodeling Group of Maryland shares a quick guide on identifying real remodeler reviews.

Consider the Source

Authentic reviews are best found on reputable platforms like the Better Business Bureau and Yelp, as well as their Google Business listings. Websites dedicated to consumer advice, like the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), can also be a good source. Social media reviews can sometimes be helpful, just make sure that it’s left by a legitimate reviewer. A history of leaving feedback for various services or products is a good indicator; an account created solely to write a single review is not.  Watch for a sudden influx of reviews within a short period, which could indicate fabricated feedback.

Look for Detailed and Balanced Feedback

Genuine reviews often contain concrete details about the service provided, including specifics about the project management, communication, timeliness and the quality of the workmanship. They provide a balanced view, mentioning both positives and any potential drawbacks, offering a well-rounded perspective. Contrastingly, inauthentic reviews feel vague or generic, sometimes with just a thumbs-up emoji instead of a full review.

Be Wary of Overly-Enthusiastic or Vague Language

Reviews that use overly-enthusiastic language or make over-the-top claims can be red flags. Similarly, reviews lacking in specific details about the project, or the use of odd grammar might be deceptive, often an indicator of poorly-translated text copied and pasted from a template.

Check if the Remodeler Offers References

References are the best kind of contractor reviews — they’re immediate, let you ask questions and, in some cases, let you inspect the remodeler’s handiwork. Some may consider it time-consuming, but the information you get from each call is worth it. A reputable remodeler should have no problem providing at least three references upon request.
