Whole-House Renovation: A Basic Checklist

It’s an open secret these days that home remodeling or renovation is expensive, not only in terms of money, but time as well. Therefore, most people, if they really need to freshen up their house, would rather make every penny count.

We know exactly what you mean. This is why we’ve come up with a short checklist – more like a guide – to help you plan for your remodel and anticipate likely pain points.

Talk About Your Grand Design

What do you want to accomplish with a remodel? Is it due to safety concerns? Is it more of a cosmetic upgrade? Is it for functional reasons?

Discuss the overall theme and the reasons for your remodel with your contractor. At this stage, many new addition contractors will also advise you on the specific things you need to do or secure beforehand, such as getting permits. They will also draw up plans or offer suggestions on how they plan to go about building your dream.

Check Your Existing Home Components

It’s not wise to proceed with a whole-house remodel if your power and plumbing are not up to snuff. Check with your contractor to determine if these components are still working and if the remodel is going to affect them and what their plans are to restore electricity and/or running water. A contractor that doesn’t do this before remodeling your home presents a huge red flag.

Additions

If possible, try to include everything in the first assessment of the project. The contractors may not have time or space (sometimes both) to accommodate changes in the plan. Resist the urge to add more to your project as this will only increase the timeline to unmanageable levels and cost you even more.
