If you have a growing family, you’ve probably considered moving to a bigger home. But what if you’re in a place that has everything else that your family needs: a safe neighborhood, a good school district and a job that’s just a few minutes away? Today, we discuss an alternative to moving – home additions.
What Are Home Additions?
Home additions are typically single or multiple rooms built onto the side of (and accessible from) the house as opposed to being a separate unit built in the same property. They can be purpose-built as in a hobby room or a home office, or they can be extensions of a living space like additional bedrooms. While some home additions increase the house’s footprint, existing space like the attic or the basement can be finished. An additional story can likewise be considered as home additions.
Benefits Over Moving
As we described in our introduction, uprooting your family takes a lot of time, effort and resources as well as giving up everything you like about your current home and its surroundings. Of course, home remodeling projects like home additions are far from being a walk in the park. However, they offer the following advantages:
- It’s less complicated. Relocating to a new house means you have to scout for a new house and sell your home, which involves dealing with people, such as realtors and home inspectors. A home remodel, on the other hand, involves working with just the new addition contractors – even better if they’re design-build contractors.
- It’s less stressful. Unless you’re moving to a home that’s within the same city or neighborhood, you and your family will have to face the stress and anxiety of leaving your friends and making new ones.
- No need to pack and move. If you do manage to sell your home and buy a new house, there’s the matter of packing your things, hiring movers and maybe selling your furniture and other items to reduce the load. There’s also the matter of unpacking at the new location and hiring a local remodeler to improve the home to your liking. With a home addition, all you need to worry about is temporarily storing your things out of the way for the duration of the project.
