Common Mistakes to Avoid When Adding an In-Law Suite

An in-law suite, also known as a granny flat, mother-in-law apartment or accessory dwelling unit (ADU), is a type of home addition that provides a private living space to loved ones who live on your property. Today, we talk about the mistakes you need to avoid when adding an in-law suite.

What Is an In-Law Suite?

In-law suites function much like guest suites. They are typically used to provide accommodation to extended family members – not just for in-laws despite its name – who are staying on the property. Unlike a guest room, an in-law suite has its own plumbing and electricity, sometimes with its own bathroom and kitchen. In-law suites can be a separate unit much like a small house or attached to the main house but with its own entry door.

An in-law suite can allow adult children to look after their aging parents who want their own private space, but may require constant attention, usually for medical reasons. It can also serve as a guest house or a quarantine suite.

Mistakes to Avoid When Adding an In-Law Suite

Avoid the following common mistakes when planning your in-law suite:

Taking the DIY route – While it is possible for DIYers to undertake renovation projects, it usually is best to leave in-law suites to new addition contractors. Such projects are far more complex than a shed or outdoor deck and often require more time and labor. More importantly, there won’t be warranty coverage for workmanship. The cost of correcting mistakes will have to be paid out of your own pocket.

Not checking the local building codes – In-law suites are essentially mini-houses and are, therefore, subject to local building codes. Adhering with building codes will result in a structurally safe and sound in-law suite, and will help you avoid the cost of correcting a noncompliant project.

Choosing the lowest bid – Never choose the lowest bid from prospective remodelers. It may save you money up front, but it may cost you more in the long run. Unscrupulous remodelers may include cheap materials and labor just to come up with a low bid. However, home additions like an in-law suite needs to be as durable and long-lasting as the house itself, and choosing the cheaper option means you’ll be more likely to spend on repairs over time.
