It is common practice for a house’s occupants to evacuate during home renovation, given the noise, dust and activity. There are, however, certain projects that won’t necessitate you leaving your home. But you still need to take steps to make you comfortable.

Pack and Store the Displaced Items — Your contractor will ask you to clear the area that will be renovated. Most homeowners would simply move the contents of one room to another, which shouldn’t be the case as it will disrupt how you use these other rooms. What you need is a plan that keeps items out of the way of the contractors without getting in your way. The garage is the most commonly used space, but short-term storage units are a great alternative.
There Will Be Constant Dust — Good home remodeling contractors will clean up at the end of every workday and will use precautions like plastic sheeting to protect items inside the house. However, set your expectations that there will always be dust during the entire remodeling period. This means you may have to vacuum parts of your home on a daily basis.
Set Up a Temporary Kitchen — A kitchen remodeling project will leave you without a functional kitchen for a while. This means you need to set up a temporary kitchen in another part of the house with access to running water, electricity and a temporary pantry for your paper plates. Perhaps, even get a portable outdoor grill to save on gas or electricity. Keep in mind that kitchen renovations take weeks to finish so you’ll need something better equipped than a campsite setup.
Designate Areas for Kids and Pets — Work areas are not places for kids and pets. The noise could be upsetting, and they could get underfoot in a busy area. While you can send them to stay with relatives or friends, consider designating an area in the house away from where the work is happening. For example, if the bedroom is part of the renovation project, set them up with a tent or blanket fort in the master bedroom.
