Are You Designing a Multigenerational Home?

A study conducted by the Pew Research Center has shown a growing number of Americans are choosing to live in multigenerational homes. A multigenerational home means grandchildren, children, parents, grandparents and other close relatives all live under the same roof. This trend has brought about new improvements in the way home remodeling contractors design and build homes.

Today, it’s more important than ever to remodel a house to accommodate occupants with an ever-increasing age gap.

Prioritize Accessibility

Adding some accessibility options to your bathroom or kitchen remodeling projects can do wonders for aging people. Consider adding handlebars near bathtubs and showers, or even anti-slip floor materials for kitchens. Keeping bedrooms on the first floor is also a great way to “age-proof” your home. Talk to your contractor about other accessibility options you can tack on to your project.

Dual-Purpose Space

When you have a family whose ages range from newborns to seniors, rooms might not always retain their purpose over the years. Try your best to anticipate future changes in your home’s design, and incorporate it to your remodeling project now. This can save a lot of headaches further down the road. Some rooms are readily convertible to other types of rooms, but some are not. For example, it’s easier to turn a room into a bedroom, but not the other way around. Think about this when finalizing the details of your remodel.

Adaptability Is the Name of the Game

Nobody can predict the future, but you can try your best to make your home flexible to any changes that could occur. It’s easier to have your new addition contractors take certain design factors and requirements into consideration now than to have to undergo another full remodel down the road.
