Planning Your Home Addition: Questions to Ask Yourself

A home addition is a great way to expand your home’s living area. But you must be prepared for the project. Here are some questions that you should ask yourself before launching your project.

Why Do I Need a Home Addition?

There are many types of home additions: a sunroom, a master bedroom suite or an attic conversion, to name a few. If you can’t decide on which home addition to choose, make a list of the reasons why you need the additional space. If you have young children who bunk together, remember that they grow up fast. Eventually, they will want their own rooms. If this is the case, then a second floor addition or an attic conversion may be just what you need.

Have I Thought About Other Ways to Extend My Indoor Spaces?

Once you have an idea of what you need a home addition for, check your home, and see if you have existing spaces that might solve your dilemma. Perhaps, one of the rooms in your home is being used for storage. In which case, you should use it as another bedroom. Maybe you have a three-car garage that houses only one. Consider converting the garage as a connecting room. If you’re out of usable space in your home, then it’s time to consult with home remodeling contractors.

Will the Home Addition Boost My Home’s Value?

It doesn’t matter whether you’re planning to sell your home or age in place. A good remodeling project should boost your home’s value. The right options can make a big difference. Choosing insulated glass for your sunroom can turn it from a three-season sunroom to a four-season one. Finding materials that let the home addition match the original structure can result in a seamless look. Once you have established which direction your remodeling project will go, work with a licensed remodeler to make it happen.
