Tips to Prevent Miscommunication During a Major Home Remodel

Miscommunication during a remodeling project can cause delays and increase project costs. Fortunately, you can avoid miscommunication by following certain guidelines.

Have a Good Contract

Verbal agreements do not provide a reliable or accurate record so you need to get everything in writing as much as possible. You should have a written contract that specifies the start and completion date, the full scope of the project and the complete breakdown of materials and project responsibilities. This contract will protect both you and your contractor because it makes sure that everyone is on the same page.

Choose a Reliable Contractor

When interviewing your new addition contractors for your project, you need to look for strong rapport between you and the contractor. Your contractor will be your working partner for the duration of your project so you need to hire someone you can trust. Look for transparency and a respectful problem-solving approach.

Communicate More Often

You will need to be present and available for the project because there are times when your contractor will need your input. You need to be there for project meetings and walk-throughs. Problems will arise if either you or one of the people you are working with are not present for major design decisions. Figure out how your contractor likes to communicate and set regular meetings.
