Moving Out for a Major Home Remodel: 3 Essentials to Know

A small remodeling project generates noise and mess, but a major one takes those to the next level. You don’t actually have to suffer through all that, so to make your remodeling experience less stressful, you should consider moving out temporarily until the project is nearly done. Here’s what you need to know.

  1. Learn more about your options. It’s best to stay somewhere close so that driving to and from your home to receive progress reports from your project manager will be simpler. You can secure a short-term rental apartment, which is typically fully or semi-furnished. If it comes unfurnished, you can make yourself and your family comfortable by bringing along some of your own furniture and décor. You also have the option to rent an RV or mobile home, which allows you to “camp out” on your property and still access your own home’s utilities (if your project doesn’t involve cutting them for an extended period). Another easy way to find temporary housing is to use sites like Airbnb and VRBO.
  1. Don’t be put off by the extra costs. Sure, temporary housing and storage can place additional strain on your budget, but you’ll soon find that moving out is actually more cost-effective. For one thing, staying in your home during a major remodel makes the work take longer. You’ll need to pay for that extra time because the contractor will need to work around the schedule. Not only that, but you’ll also need to cover additional charges for site protection, daily cleanup and the rush to finish any mechanical work quickly (so that plumbing and electrical services won’t be interrupted for too long).
  1. Take temporary storage into account. You’ll need to make sure everything is cleared away from the worksite before your remodeler arrives. This way, you can protect your valuables better while ensuring your home is more easily accessible. But where exactly will you put all of your things? Depending on the number of the items and the size of your project, you can either store everything in a separate room inside your home (if the renovation doesn’t extend to that area) or rent a self-storage unit.
